Taxes and contributions in Austria

In Austria, income tax and social insurance fund most of the state budget and the social safety net. Your salary is reduced by social insurance and wage tax, while the employer carries additional payroll costs. The income tax tariff is progressive: each additional euro in a higher band is taxed more, while the subsistence level stays tax-free.

In concrete terms for 2026: of the full-time median of €4,205 gross per month, about €2,819 remains net after social insurance and income tax. Employees pay 17.57% social insurance up to the maximum contribution base of €6,930 per month. The entry tax rate is 20%, the top rate 55%.

From the employer's side, this median salary costs about €5,459 per month, i.e. 30% more than the gross. Of the total labour cost, roughly 53% reaches the employee as net pay; the rest is the tax wedge of taxes and contributions.
