How the pension is calculated
Since 2005 everyone born from 1955 has a pension account (Allgemeines Pensionsgesetz). Each year 1.78 % of the contribution bases is credited, i.e. of the gross salary including the 13th and 14th and of periods such as child-raising or unemployment benefit. At most the annual ceiling counts, 420 daily contribution ceilings, in 2026 420 × €231.00 = €97,020.00.
At the end of each year the balance so far is revalued with the revaluation factor (§ 108a ASVG), which follows wage growth, so early credits keep their value against wages. The sum is the total credit (Gesamtgutschrift); divided by 14 it gives the monthly gross pension at the statutory age.
Retiring earlier costs: with the corridor pension (from 63 years, 504 insurance months) 0.425 % less per month, 5.1 % a year. Working longer adds 0.425 % per month, at most 15.3 %, plus further credits. Which option applies when is under retirement age. What a gross pension leaves net is in the pension calculator; how it rises each year after that, in pension increase and purchasing power.
Assumptions and limits of the forecast
- Insured before 2005: the periods up to 2013 are in the initial credit (Kontoerstgutschrift), worked out under old law (§ 15 APG). The forecast treats those years like account years; it gets more accurate with the balance from your pension account.
- Continuously employed from January of the first year until the month before the pension starts, at today's salary rising with wages. Past years are therefore assumed, not your real contribution bases.
- Child-raising: 48 months per child from the birth year, in whole calendar years; a further child ends the previous child's period, so months never count twice. Multiple births and sharing between parents are not modelled. Child-raising counts towards the 180 insurance months, not the 84 from employment.
- Long-term insured pension: contribution months from work are the months from the first year, plus child-raising before it up to 60 months; military or civilian service is not modelled separately. Heavy work counts as you state it. The early-starter bonus counts the months of work up to the month of the 20th birthday, for pensions starting from 2022.
- Not modelled: partial pension, unemployment, part-time or self-employment, invalidity pension, the equalisation supplement with its bonus and the first adjustment after retirement.
- Net under the 2026 rules: tax brackets and credits will change by the time you retire, so the net in today's values is an approximation.
